MADE TO ROAM: Mavis the Airstream
This is the first part of our ongoing series "Made to Roam" that features our friends on the move.
Sheena and Jason are living the ultimate dream of traveling the country in their Airstream trailer. We caught up with our road tripping friends to find out about life on the road...
Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you are doing?
We are Sheena, Jason and Riley the dog. We started our love affair with our old, beautiful Airstream trailer in May of 2016. We spent the first six years of our marriage living a very routine life in suburbia. The usual go to work, come home, go to bed, repeat kind of life. One day, it hit us that our biggest memories from our first few years of marriage were our epic vacations and rambling road trips through the west. We dreamed up this wild, romantic idea that we would live and work from an Airstream and travel the country. And so that’s what we did. We spent seven months completely remodeling a 1975 Airstream from the ground up. Now our days belong to us. We decide what we do, where we go and where we sleep at night. As unsettling as all of that would have sounded to us ten years ago, it’s become the most freeing thing we’ve ever done.
Best road trip ever?
Our best road trip ever is the first one Jason and I took out west with my cousin and her husband in the spring of 2015. It's our favorite because that's we fell in love with the idea of wandering and exploring this epic country. We had a lot of firsts on that trip. First time seeing the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Mojave Desert, Area 51, Extraterrestrial Highway and the Hoover Dam. We slept in a sketchy trailer motel and in hammocks under the stars in the Mojave Desert (and I'm sure we swallowed a tarantula or two in our sleep). Death Valley is our favorite National Park to date. It was the most awe-inspiring place we've ever seen. Who knew there could be so much color in in one of the most inhospitable places on earth? It was after this trip that our dream of Airstream living started to take shape.
What's on your playlist?
I'm an old soul and Jason's a converted old soul. I've been into 60s and 70s rock since I was a kid and I showed Jason the way when we started dating. We listen to a lot of the Rolling Stones, CCR, The Doors, The Who, Beatles, with some Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson thrown in the mix. ;) Newer artists I dig are Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Leon Bridges, the Black Keys, Alabama Shakes, Avett Brothers and Haim. I also feel it important that I mention we sat a few seats from the catwalk at a Rolling Stones concert a couple years back and Mick and I made eye contact. He's old enough to be my grandpa but still...he's MICK JAGGER.
What you cant live without?
Our dog. He goes EVERYWHERE with us. He's been on almost every vacation over the past 10 years. He's been as far north as Niagara Falls and all the way down to Key West. He's climbed the Rockies and paddleboarded in the ocean. He loves Airstream life and all of the new places he gets to check out. He's an adventure dog through and through and we feel so lucky to have him along on this wild ride.
Someone who has had a major influence on you?
My mom. She's the reason why I'm am who I am. She taught me that I could do anything I wanted in this world and is and always has been my biggest supporter. I've never known anyone quite like her. She's the smartest, most loving, most positive, most capable person. We joke with her that she's a female MacGruber (the spoof version of MacGyver from SNL). She can make or fix anything. If you complain about a product that doesn't work quite right, she'll take it, work her magic and just like that, MacGruber has fixed it. Or she goes one step further and just makes stuff from scratch. She's an inventor at heart. She was a huge help on our Airstream renovation. She made a flipping sofa for us. A SOFA! Did she know how to do upholstery work? No, but she learned on YouTube and obviously did a phenomenal job. Because...MacGruber. Learning from her all my life made me an independent, industrious, creative person. I like to think of myself as a MacGruber-in-training.
Favorite account to follow on Instagram (other than us)
@summerofseventyfive --- I like to think of Amber as my Australian counterpart living the life I'd have if I weren't traveling the US in a vintage Airstream: life in a shiny orange 1975 VW Kombi Campmobile. She's got a great eye for photography and her gallery is ridiculously beautiful.
Bucket list item?
We want to visit all 59 National Parks. I used to think I wanted to be a world-traveler until I realized how much there is to see in our own country. It is so diverse and full of so much raw, jaw-dropping beauty. Just when you think there are parking lots and shopping malls in every corner of the country, you realize so much of our country is still wild and untouched. Just how it should be.
